Resurrection

This is what we call Jonah's fishy face. He does NOT, I repeat, NOT like it. This mask is connected to his nebulizer which administers albuterol. The treatment helps a bunch Gaga saved the day today. We received the vibrating massager, a frog, that didn't work. Gaga bypassed one of the switches and waala. It vibrates. He also looked at the jiggle bug and fixed it. I tried my hand at soldering today, I need a lot more practice!!! So today was pretty interesting. Last night was pretty long. We awoke every 4 hours to give Jonah a breathing treatment. As the day progressed on Jonah kept getting worse. His heart rate kept rising, the highest was 212 beats per minute. This was during a time of struggle during breathing treatments. But even when he was calm his heart rate was still elevated. in the high 180's low 190's. We got a hold of our pediatrician. She suggested that we go to PCMC because of the problems with Jonah's heart he can't sustain a hear...

The Doctor's visit

What a huge mess today was. Yesterday when I called the person I talked with wanted me to come in right then. I was unable to because we were in SLC to get some meds at PCMC and then off to the air port to pick up mamaw and gaga. Today when we showed up for our appointment, the receptionist said, "You have an appointment for tomorrow and another for Thursday." I told them about my previous conversation. The receptionist left to talk with Dr. Stokes, when she finally came back she said that dr. stokes can not see Jonah today but one of her associates could see Jonah. A couple good things came out of this visit. Jonah has not gained any weight still 18 lbs, and his blood pressure is amazingly 105/72. Jonah does not have the flu, and we will find out if tomorrow if he has a viral infection. We were sent home with a nebulizer to give albuterol treatments every 3-4 hours or as needed. Jonah's breathability is doing much better after the visit. To do our part and not...

TROUBLE A BREWIN'

So Jonah has a cough and has run a slight fever this evening. His Oxygen needs went up last night, and we can hear the chest congestion without a stethoscope. What does this mean???? A trip to the doc tomorrow. Hopefully this turns out to be something minor; but with Jonah, nothing is minor. So we will see. Gaga and Mamaw came home today, Jonah didn't recognize them at first, but he has finally warmed back up to them. Here we go!!! Wish us luck.

Ode To Toby

Toby is Grandma Raines mini-snouzer, he escaped from the house today while we opened the front door. He raced out into the street and was hit by a car. We feel so bad!!! Grandma Rain has been in Texas for the last 10 days and is due home tomorrow. It was the first time I have ever dug a grave on a Sunday. I kept thinking to myself, "This is the perfect weather for a funeral." It was a comforting thought. Jonah has had a pretty good day, if you consider he has slept a lot today. Tanya said she can finally see the tip of the tooth coming out of the blister on the top right. Poor little guy. Teething seems to be pretty exhaustive for Jonah.

Smoke, Smoke, Smoke

Today, Jonah was able to take a nap outside while Tanya and I mowed the lawn. I think he enjoys being outside, a lot. Nothing special happened out there, other than it was pretty fun to do stuff as a family. We loaded the grass clippings in the back of the truck to take over to the sheep at Mitch and Morgans house because the feed in the pasture is, well, there is not much there. I was soooo very much excited about this part because, we got to do it as a family. I asked Tanya if she and Jonah would like to go for a ride with me to take the clippings. She said sure and we loaded jonah, a diaper bag, and 1 oxygen tank for the short trip. When we returned smoke was filling the air!! I rushed into the house grabbed the necessaries. By necessaries I mean Everything, feeding pump, more O2, all the meds (we were out of drawn up seringes and had to draw them up for the rest of the day and tomorrow). Into the truck, Chris and Loraines Ford (a manual transmission), and off we went. It ...

Finally Friday!!!!!!

the day was a lot of fun. Jonah had a tiny blow out so he spent most of the afternoon in just a diaper, until mommy arrived home. He and I had a lot of fun. We laid on the floor me pretending not to watch him rolling over. He goes both ways, as long as you are not looking. It was fun. Jonah is AWESOME!!!! He is such a happy little guy. My favorite is that I can walk into the kitchen, or out of his sight, and when I get back in view, his arms and legs are flailing and his mouth is open in excitement. I think Jax is going to have some competition for the "home-coming" of a parent/owner. Jonah was very popular today. Cousins Matt and Maddy came over briefly to say hello, along with Aunt Morgan and Uncle Mitch. Nana and Papa Layne came by for a while to see Jonah and get some lovin' off him. Nana loves hanging out with Jonah, she commented, "Is he always this happy?" Yup, unless he is in pain and/or tired or teething or . . . Also some wonderful relief ...

Another Day Down

Today Dad and Jonah made it all the way to Ogden alone. We picked up mom and headed to PCMC to go to the pharmacy. We needed to pick up some meds. I know this doesn't sound like a big thing, but to dad it is. He has been working on the independence thing for a while now. I guess it is the whole "Face the Danger" statement. I worry though, the safety department at Granite was pretty big on doing things over and over again so repititicious that we lose the ability to look at the small things. I worry that I may get so comfortable with taking Jonah to appointments and things alone that when I need a second hand I won't have it. Sure I can pull over and take care of him, that is no problem; but sometimes there is more to it than that. The statement keeps coming to mind, "The Lord can't protect you from stupidity." Ha ha ha, I know right. So this is my latest dilema.

"I'm a real boy"

The song of the day: "I got no strings to hold me down, to lift me up, to make me frown, I got no strings so you can see, I got no strings on me." Not sure if the words are correct, buy you get the idea. Jonah had some visitors today, Mike and Heidi Johnson. It was a good time!!! Lots of laughs and smiles. No change in status, just kept swimming just kept swimming. I am not sure what is up with the movies tonight, oh boy. Jonah is doing well, so are his parents!!! Tomorrow we get to go pick up some meds at PCMC. We will pick up mom after work and head down.

COOOOOOLLLLLLL

A huge THANK YOU To JBF Heating and A/C for donating the labor and equipment to aide Jonah in maintaining body temperature. I know summer is over and fall is upon us, and for all of your heating and air conditioning needs, please consider JBF !!! You will be able to see the contact information in a picture next to the posts. Another thank you to Christy Alvey and her husband Brent for doing some leg work in helping our little boy out. The generosity of people never ceases to amaze me. When Jared came he put our furnace filter on the Top 10 worst in 18 years, "Not a good list to be on." he said. He did a great job with the installation and didn't even leave a mess!!! I highly recommend the services of JBF !!! Now on to Jonah. He had a great day!! We made it down to the McKay-Dee NICU for a brief visit where he was able to see some of his life saving friends!!! I know he was tired, but I just know he enjoyed seeing all his friends. The teething thing is ge...

Lovin' the Tub

Today was pretty good. Jonah slept really well, as long as he was in his daddy's arms. To say the least Daddy had a good long nap!!! Jonah supported (stood/locked out his knees) his weight, with the help of daddy supporting at his chest, for 21 seconds today!!! A record!!! In the video you will see Jonah playing in the tub. Mom put swimmers on him, not really but enough so that no one could see the hair growth all over. Poor little guy. In about 6-8 weeks he will be off one days dose of the steroids and the hairy side effect should go away.

Hmmmmmmmmmm

Not sure what to write tonight.... Jonah did very well today. He enjoyed his time at a birthday party for his aunt Nee-nee, brittney. Mom stayed home with Jonah today from church while dad went to church. Grandma and Grandpa are in Texas, Dave is on his own this week. He says he is good with it. We will find out this week.

Craziness

So today Jonah was all over the place. He actually cried when I started to sing him the Battle Hymn Republic. I guess he doesn't like the bold sound his dad can belt out, or maybe it is the off key and wrong tone. Ha ha ha. Jonah was super duper duper extra duper drooly today. Our guess is that he is cutting more teeth than we can count without taking our shoes and socks off. Dave got a chance to go out on the boat to go fishing today. He took Jax, the boat dog, and a good time was had by all.

Facing the Danger

I hope it is ok that I am borrowing a phrase that a young girl of one of our dear friends uses when timid or afraid of something. her mom says, "XXXX," the daughters name, "Face the Danger." What an inspiration!!! So today Tanya and I faced the danger. The day started out looking like it was going to be rough. Jonah had slept A LOT today, more than usual and has been on over 1 liter. We had planned on visiting Grandparents Layne while they were camping up in the Onieda Narrows tonight. Last minute decisions led us up there. Jonah is cutting another tooth, number 4, so he has been sleeping to cope with the pain. We drove just over an hour to get up there. To our surprise my dad recieved our message that we were coming up, my Uncle and Aunt along with both spouses were up there camping with my parents, and they cleaned up the camp for us; so much that they went to the extent of shoveling out the fire pit so no ashes could blow up and around if by chance ther...

Clumsy

Today was a rough day for Dave. On the way to the dr. appointment I, dave, was getting Jonah feeding ready, when I dumped the formula on the floor of the mini-van. It only got worse from there. The visit with nureosurgery was good. We found out that Jonah's hydrocephalus is stable. He did mention that there is excess fluid around the brain, he asked about Jonah's development progression to see if he was platueing or progressing. He said that he is leaning to not put in a shunt at this time because head growth and the brain bleeds are stable. We only need to go back to visit him if Jonah stops progressing or regresses, and we will have to address the issue of to much fluid causing pressure on the brain. Pressure on the brain will hinder Jonah's ability to develop appropriately. A visit to PCMC NICU was the highlight of the day. It was fun to see some of our old friends in the NICU. Jonah had huge smiles for his old friends, it was fun to see the reactions of peopl...

ToDaY WhAt iT iS

Not much to say about today. I think these teeth in Jonah's mouth are doing him in. He slept a lot today. But when he was awake, he was all about the attention from dad, and mom when she arrived home after work. He had a visit from some wonderful and dear friends from Ogden. The Jensen's came for a brief visit. It was good to visit with them!!! Thanks for coming up guys. I get a little frustrated with our situation. I mean, Jonah seems like such a normal kid, he is for the most part; but when it comes to standing, sitting, rolling, eating, and making sounds, it gets a little frustrating at times because we have to work so long and hard on it. I get discouraged some times, but we get through it. Jonah is such a sweet little All-Star, it is not hard to love him. My most favorite time of day is when we get ready to put him in his bed at night time. No, not because he is a sleep for a long period of time and Tanya and have a bit of time to ourselves for free time to han...

music

Jonah loves music. When mommy gets home they watch/listen to some dvd's labeled "Kids Songs" Jonah loves it when you sing a long, and especially dance a long with them. Grandma Rain taught/is teaching Jonah to say please with his hands. Her ingenious idea of when Jonah is screeching in his own unique way not to give him to toy right away, but instead teach him how to say please with his hand(s). AWESOME!!! After two visits today both visits from Speech Therapists Jonah is one tired boy. He slept for about 3 hours this afternoon and then about 5 he took another nap for about 90 minutes. Hope he sleeps well tonight!?!?! Oh yeah, I almost forgot. IHC HomeCare is sending out a nurse to get a weight and a blood pressure weekly on Jonah. And the big WHOOOOO is during RSV season the nurse will come to the house to give Jonah the Synergis shot to try and help him not contract RSV!!!!! Super Exciting. I need some weigh-in on this potential delima we may come across in th...

rolling?!?!?!?!?!?!

Image
This is how Jonah gives his kisses. Open mouth and slobbery. I bet my brother Andy has been teaching Jonah how to gives kisses!!!! ha ha ha Brother!!! Just a fun pic of Jonah's eyes Just a fun pic of Jonah smilin' Today was a lot of fun. Last night Dad caught Jonah rolling back to his back. It was like he didn't want to get caught doing it. Then today the same thing, at first. By mid afternoon, Jonah had lost his shyness of the camera and was rolling over to his side like a champ. The video only shows one side, but he does both!!!! What a HUGE step this is!!!!!! We are soooo very excited about it. Also Jonah is trying to cut both of his top teeth at the same time. If they do not hurry and come through they will be joined by a few more on the bottom. What a little trooper he is!!! The storm today was brief, but a lot of fun. It poured here, as well as most of northern Utah I am guessing. Also another fun thing about the video is the "singing" you c...

sucker

Image
This is a picture of Jonah. Jonah is tired. Jonah is tired and unhappy. Jonah is playing with some musical toys he received from his Aunt Candice and Uncle Scott. Today his Aunt Kara came for a visit. I think all three had an enjoyable time, Tanya, Kara, and Jonah. Last night we played pretty hard just before bed time and Jonah did very well last night, most of the previous nights he was waking up needing attention at the unmentionable hours of the morning. Today he woke up 730 am took a nap today from 1100 to 2 pm. and was awake Until bed time at 8 pm. We hope this schedule sticks. Tonight tastes went ok. Jonah blew bubbles with most of the peaches we fed him. We tried a root beer flavored sucker, the video. I don't know if you will be able to see his tongue very well, but it is prodding the sucker for a taste. It was pretty funny.

And they Rejoiced

Not to much has happened today to be to excited about. Jonah was able to go outside and watch us stack hay and play with the new kitties. Mom said he did really well. Jonah liked Tod the best. Tod is the name of a kittie. Jonah had a pretty calm day. As a result, so did mommy. Thanks to every one who is keeping us in their thoughts and prayers.

...And the Dr. Celebrated!

So today Jonah went to visit his pal Dr. Null. Dr. Null was so very impressed with the progress Jonah is making. His blood pressure was 100 over 70, right in the acceptable range! He is down on his oxygen to 1/2 liter during the day and 3/4 to 1 at night. He is off Morphine and now we are working on his Ativan. Then Jonah's Physical Therapist came to play and was blown away with Jonah's progress. He is moving his legs a ton more and his fine motor skills are becoming more refined. This evening Jonah got to hangout with Grandma Layne while Mom, Dad, Gaga, and Mamaw went to a ward party. Thanks Grandma!!!

one year and two days old

Today Jonah has been too busy playing to take naps, and when it came time or bed. He just wanted to blow raspberries in our direction. It is kinda cute. Jonah is becoming more and more active as time goes by; yet, it doesn't take much for him to quickly lose all his energy on having a dirty diaper, or fussing over a bubble in his tummy, or the one that really wears him out, is having a retching episode, this really takes it out of Jonah. Poor little guy. Ok late at night, just before I fall asleep, I have begun to wonder if all dads feel the same way about their own children the way I feel about Jonah. He is such a wonderful little boy. Sure he has his ways of manipulating, but all-in-all, I love the little guy!!! His personality is amazing. He flirts with all the females that come in contact with him, he dazzles people with his smile, and woos them in with his eyes. Honestly, I can not think of a time when Jonah has been cross when not in discomfort, I better qualify that...

Chillin'

Today was a pretty calm day. Jonah and I played most of the day away, because he sure wasn't taking any naps. At dinner time Jonah sat up with us at the table, on daddy's lap. It was fun to watch Jonah grab dad's fork with a piece of pork chop on it, and smell it. Jonah is doing very well. He is a very happy baby. For everything, all the bad stuff Jonah has, it is hard to tell because he looks like wonderful, other than the cannula on in his nose.

Birthday fun

Image
Jonah playing in one of his cakes. This is how Jonah fell asleep this afternoon with Morphine, his bear. Brittney. What else can be said!!! I Thought I would have more room in the truck rather than the car, boy was I wrong. It is full, from the floor up. Jonah was not very excited to ride in the truck. He stared at me the entire ride to Bothwell, with the same look. Bill Grogan's Goat, Jonah loves it. Jonah on tummy time. He is actually pushing off with his hands. Reading or Hiding? You choose. This is brittney. She is wonderful!!! We love her. Jonah's birthday was wonderful. Thank you to every who called to wish and sing Jonah a birthday song. Today they burnt the field behind the house. Jonah and I evacuated to Bothwell A big thanks to Nanny and Papa for letting us hang out at their house for the afternoon, and hosting the party, well more like get together. Jonah has been on .5 liters of oxygen today and doing very well, unless he fusses or gets upset. Then we h...

Softies

Image
Getting all serious on us now!!! This is the cake right out of the oven. This is a preview to Jonah's birthday cake. It is a train. Tanya wants a Little Engine that Could theme for Jonah's first birthday because of how hard Jonah has fought to stay alive!!! This is the finished product. I know it is not much to brag about, I, Dave, frosted it. I learned that I almost have the patience to decorate cakes but not quite. Tanya's is much cuter. This is the cake that Tanya decorated. My quote to her was, "It's dang cute, but it looks girly." She said this gave her a complex and she will buy cakes from now on. We both laughed. Jonah loves his balloon. Going Psycho loves his balloon!!! I love this pic because of the eyes. Ok, maybe we are a little bit soft, sure we gave Jonah a couple of his gifts early, but what first child didn't!!! Ha ha ha. Jonah enjoyed his Thomas the Tank balloon very much today. maybe the string more than the balloon. Jonah is ...

Birthday Present Preview...

Image
So today Jonah got a sneek peek at his birthday present from Gaga and Mamaw. Jonah was determined to be in the middle of the action today which took him to the kitchen. We put him in his Bumbo chair to watch the goings on but he soon became bored and weary from holding up his head. So we brought out his birthday present to play with and boy did he LOVE that! He was able to spin the center section all by himself! He worked hard and played hard today. Mom learned that he can give wet sloppy kisses! It is soooooo cute. Dad was determined to get a good Mommy-son picture... he did well don't you think?

Firsts and Lasts

Image
So I might get in trouble for posting these two pics, I will deal with the heat. They are just toooo precious. This is Papa and Maddy. I will let Morgan, Maddy's mom, tell you the story behind it. This is Maddy, two days older than Jonah. She Loves her books!! Jonah still not sure about the jiggle pig Tanya said after leaving SLC today, "Dave I have it, I know what to get Jonah!!! Lets buy our favorite candy bars and give him the wrappers!" Jonah is fascinated with paper wrappers, Shiny wrappers. Jonah Unwrapping his present, just a few days early. Today is a day of firsts and lasts. Lets start with the lasts first!!! Tonight is the last night we will have to wake up at 2 am to give Jonah meds. Tomorrow will be the last day Jonah will be on Morphine. and today is the last Saturday of the week!!! I hope you laughed. Today we started the day off with a trek to SLC. We went to visit Dave's aunt for a good share of the day in preparation of the wheat field be...

chasing rainbows/Daddy's thoughts

Today has been a pretty calm day. Jonah has slept most of the day, well until about 2 pm for the most part. Jonah laid in Mom and Dads bed for a better part of an hour just chillin'. It was fun for dad just to take time out and lay next to Jonah and cuddle in bed. While Jonah was sleeping I made phone calls to companies to see if they were willing to donate equipment to put central air in the home. Most trade businesses said, "This is not a good year to be asking that question. Last year would have been a better year, we were looking for tax write-offs all the time. This year not so much." I called a manufacturer. They took down my info and said it may be the end of next week or the end of the month before they could get back to me with an answer. So now I will keep my head down and looking for the, "Yes" answer. Jonah's tooth is finally through. It took some tylenol to help him, but it has arrived. This evening was pretty fun, we were invited to...

Mundane

If I could choose an animated cartoon character to be today, I would have to choose Eore from Whinne the Poo. Slow speaking, kinda down, and mostly bored. Tanya would say it is a bad case of the blahzays!!!! Jonah has slept most of the day, except for when PT came by and played is guts out, and has been happy for most fo the day. It was a fun treat for dad to lay on the floor with Jonah snuggled up on one side and Jax on the other!!! High Light of the day!!!! I am back in school taking 6 credits. So far so good. I have been able to work ahead in both classes and hopefully stay ahead and finish before December gets here. I told Tanya today that if I am not careful, I am going to develop a sever case of talking to myself. I will talk to Jonah and since he can't answer I have to answer for him. You can only imagine what his answers to me are. We have some good laughs to say the least.

Date Night

A big thanks to grandma and grandpa Selman for watching Jonah for a couple hours while Tanya and I were able to go to dinner with some friends!!! It was a great time had by all, well at least for Tanya and I for sure!!!! Today Jonah is back to the usual grind, today PT came over and played for almost and hour. Jonah was completely wore out and took a pretty good nap. The other tragic event of the day was when we went up to the Bear River Hospital to get some blood drawn on Jonah. 3 pokes and a lot of needle moving mad for a very sad boy. The Tech that drew the blood said one would probably bruise. Poor little man!!! It was the first time I have seen him cry with a blood draw. The insurance rejected the claim Dr. Day put in for the central air. Oh well, at least we asked.

Still here

Today has been a pretty calm day for dad, and a big work day for Jonah. The day started of pretty lazy, lounging until 10 this morning. Then bath time and play. Jonah does well with his head control, I would consider him as a master at this skill. He is getting much better on the trunk control, still a long way to go, but we are getting there. The big couple are with his jabbering and his mouth. He is getting more and more vocal, more sigh sounds. We are using the consonance sounds of M, B, P, D, and T, trying to get some more age appropriate sound out of Jonah. So far just smiles of recognition that Jonah hears us making funny sounds. I love it.
